Kerry Drainage & Civil is proud to be named a finalist in the 2025 Auckland CCNZ HYNDS Construction Awards for the Waterview Stormwater Separation Stage 1 project, delivered for Auckland Council Healthy Waters.
The project involved a significant programme of stormwater infrastructure work across Waterview, including the installation of approximately 1km of public stormwater pipes and the construction of more than 60 private stormwater connections.
While the scale of the project presented its own challenges, one of the key focuses for the Kerry Drainage & Civil team was finding ways to reduce the environmental impact of the works.
A “Drill First” approach
As part of the project, Kerry Drainage & Civil initiated a “Drill First” approach, using directional drilling and pit drilling techniques wherever practical.
Rather than relying solely on traditional open-cut excavation, the approach allowed the team to minimise the amount of ground that needed to be excavated and removed.
The result was a significant reduction in spoil generated by the project, with more than 2,000 tonnes of spoil diverted from landfill.
The approach also helped significantly reduce the project’s carbon footprint, demonstrating how innovative construction methods can deliver practical environmental benefits while still meeting the requirements of a complex stormwater infrastructure project.
A team effort
Projects of this scale are never delivered by one organisation alone. The successful completion of Waterview Stormwater Separation Stage 1 was the result of collaboration between Auckland Council Healthy Waters, GHD, Kerry Drainage & Civil and our subcontractors and project teams.
We’re proud of the way everyone involved worked together to deliver the project and find smarter, more sustainable ways of working.
Being named a finalist in the 2025 Auckland CCNZ HYNDS Construction Awards is a great recognition of that collective effort.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the Waterview Stormwater Separation Stage 1 project.
We’re proud of the result and of the innovative thinking, collaboration and practical expertise that went into delivering it.
