Bringing water and wastewater services to a growing sports facility.
Opaheke Sports Park’s toilet and changing room facilities had no connection to the public water or wastewater networks. Instead, water and wastewater had to be transported to and from the site by truck – an impractical arrangement for a busy community sports facility.
Kerry Drainage & Civil was engaged as the main contractor to connect the park to essential public infrastructure, while working around existing and newly developed park assets, footpaths, car parks and regular users.

Finding a way through the park without disrupting it
The project required approximately 400m of new watermain and 400m of wastewater main, along with connections, manholes, valves, hydrants and a new wastewater pumpstation.
A key challenge was getting the new services through the developed park environment without damaging existing infrastructure or causing unnecessary disruption.
Kerry Drainage & Civil used long directional drilling shots to navigate around new footpaths, car parks and other park assets. One of the more challenging sections involved drilling beneath the Ōtūwairoa Stream, with a scour valve installed at the low point of the wastewater main.
The project also involved installing, testing and commissioning a new wastewater pumpstation – the first of its type delivered by Kerry Drainage & Civil.

Delivering essential services through challenging conditions
The project was delivered on time despite challenging weather conditions, including flooding of the creek that made parts of the work site inaccessible for periods.
The new pumpstation operated seamlessly from the outset, while the combination of careful planning and trenchless construction methods helped protect the park’s new assets and minimise disruption to regular park users.
The result was a fully connected sports facility, with reliable water and wastewater services delivered while keeping the surrounding park operational and protecting its existing infrastructure.
