Almost 900m³ of dense basalt, 200m of new soakage pipe and a technically complex stormwater outlet made this project a challenging urban excavation. Kerry Drainage & Civil delivered the upgrade while maintaining strong relationships with residents throughout construction.
Kerry Drainage & Civil was engaged by Auckland Council to upgrade the stormwater network along Malvern Road, installing 200m of 600mm-diameter perforated PE soakage pipe beneath the road corridor and private properties.

The project presented a significant geological challenge, with dense basalt rock encountered throughout the work area. Approximately 900m³ of rock was removed using a combination of hydraulic breaking, pre-splitting drilling and controlled rock blasting with auto-stem cartridges.
The new outlet was constructed within Folwds Park and included three 3m-diameter precast concrete manholes, incorporating 28 bore holes, together with an 1800mm-diameter Hynds First Defence Water Treatment Manhole.
With works taking place through the carriageway and private properties, careful stakeholder management was an important part of the project. The team maintained access for residents throughout construction, with the project’s approach receiving positive feedback from local residents and the client.
The completed soakage network provides an improved stormwater solution while demonstrating Kerry Drainage & Civil’s ability to manage complex ground conditions and challenging urban construction environments.
