Restoring a 120m stretch of stream while protecting the surrounding environment required more than simply repairing erosion.
Kerry Drainage & Civil delivered a carefully designed stream restoration project combining flood management, erosion control and new habitat for native species.
Auckland Council identified ongoing erosion along a 120m section of the Awaruku Stream in Torbay, which flows dectly into the Long Bay–Okura Marine Reserve. The project required a solution that would address the ongoing erosion while minimising further impacts on the natural environment.
Working from a soft-engineering design developed by Morphum Environmental, Kerry Drainage & Civil delivered a series of restoration works along the stream corridor.
The project included:
- 2x floodplains (717m2 combined)
- 4x rock riffles
- 4x lizard & fish habitats/refuges
- 2x rock bunds
- 1x reshape wetland pond outlet
- 3x emergency slip/erosion remedials
- Planting of native species
Native species were planted as part of the restoration, helping to reintegrate the completed works into the surrounding environment and support the wider ecological function of the stream.
The project demonstrates KDCivil’s ability to work within sensitive watercourse environments, combining practical civil construction with erosion management, flood mitigation and environmental restoration.
