Keeping a busy marina moving during a major stormwater upgrade.
The Half Moon Bay Marina needed improved stormwater capacity and greater resilience, while also addressing the quality of stormwater entering the coastal environment.
For KD Civil, the challenge was delivering a significant upgrade in a busy and tightly constrained marina environment, where maintaining access for residents, businesses, pedestrians and other stakeholders was essential.
The project involved installing 556m of new stormwater pipe, ranging from 375mm to 1050mm in diameter, along with 15 new manholes, catchpits and leads. The works also included a new ocean outfall incorporating a gross pollutant trap and a 1050mm WaStop valve, as well as relining an existing stormwater pipe.

Combining construction methods to minimise disruption
Rather than relying solely on conventional open-cut excavation, KD Civil used a combination of open-cut and trenchless installation methods.
This allowed the team to adapt the construction methodology to the conditions along the route, maintaining access through the busy marina and reducing disruption to residents, businesses and other stakeholders.
The approach also created opportunities to improve efficiencies during construction, with a change to trenchless methodology adopted for a significant portion of the works.
Throughout the project, Kerry Drainage & Civil managed traffic and pedestrian movements and maintained close liaison with stakeholders, while working within the strict Resource Consent conditions required for construction in the coastal and marine environment.

Improving resilience while protecting the coastal environment
The project was completed under budget, while delivering a significant upgrade to the area’s stormwater network.
The new infrastructure provides increased stormwater capacity and resilience, while the pollutant trap and treatment measures help improve the quality of stormwater entering the ocean at Half Moon Bay Marina.
By combining different construction methods with careful planning and stakeholder management, Kerry Drainage & Civil was able to deliver a major infrastructure upgrade while keeping a busy marina operating throughout the works.
